Surf Social Metanoia Project
When the ocean teaches, life is transformed
The Surf Social Metanoia Project was born from the meeting of the ocean, sport, and the purpose of transforming lives. It is a social initiative that uses surfing as a tool for human development, education, and inclusion, offering young people the opportunity to discover new paths, strengthen values, and build a future filled with possibilities.
More than surfing lessons, the project offers direction, belonging, and hope. Every wave conquered also represents a challenge overcome beyond the water.
A dream that began in the ocean
Surf Social Metanoia originated from the genuine desire of surf instructor Carlos Franco, affectionately known as Frank within the surfing community. For more than 20 years, Frank has offered free surfing lessons on Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach, driven by the wish to share the sport that transformed his own life.
This dream grew alongside his family. His children, also surfers, began taking turns teaching classes, creating a dynamic of collective learning, role modeling, and continuity. What started as a simple act of generosity gradually evolved into a true social movement.
From the wave to purpose: the birth of Surf Social Metanoia
At the end of 2024, instructor Frank joined forces with Anderson Furtado, founder of the Institute, giving rise to a social initiative initially called Onda Surf Carioca. At that time, the organization still operated under the name Instituto Anderson Furtado, already carrying the same commitment to social transformation, sport, and human development.
With the arrival of a new institutional home, new guidelines, and a broader vision, the project went through a natural process of growth and renewal—thus emerging as Surf Social Metanoia. A name that perfectly reflects what the project represents: a change in mindset, attitude, and life perspective.
Sport, education, art, and professional pathways
Today, Surf Social Metanoia serves more than 50 young people, offering free surfing lessons twice a week. Activities go far beyond sports practice, promoting values such as discipline, respect for nature, responsibility, teamwork, and self-control.
As part of its commitment to holistic development, the project also provides English classes, expanding horizons and preparing participants for academic and professional opportunities.
In addition, the project offers art workshops and surfboard workshops, where young people learn board maintenance, repair, and shaping techniques—awakening interest in a profession and strengthening the creative economy connected to surfing.
A project that shapes people, not just surfers
Surf Social Metanoia believes that sport can be a turning point in a young person’s life. In the ocean, participants learn to face fear, persist, respect limits, and trust themselves. Out of the water, these lessons are reflected in school, family life, and the community.
The project is sustained by love, volunteer work, and purpose—a mission built through presence, listening, and commitment to every young person served.
Surf Social Metanoia is more than a sports project.
It is education in motion.
It is profession with purpose.
It is transformation that begins on a wave and continues throughout life.
Because when the mind changes, life changes—and the ocean teaches this every day.
